Unlocking Accessibility Opportunities for Tourism and Event Operators

Empowering Experiences: Driving Accessibility in Tourism

Empowering Experiences has successfully supported multiple clients in securing the Access Starter Grant from the Queensland Government, Department of Tourism and Sport. This initiative helps Queensland tourism and event operators enhance their understanding of accessibility opportunities, improve visitor experiences, and strengthen inclusive service delivery.

As part of this initiative, Empowering Experiences provided specialised training through the Accessibility and Inclusion Capacity Program to staff at Hook-a-Barra, Bundaberg Distillery, Great Keppel Island Hideaway, and Keppel Konnections.

The Business Case for Accessibility in Tourism

A 2018 Tourism Research Australia survey found that 86% of respondents identified “Better Staff Training” as the key requirement for improving access to tourism activities for people with disability.

Our Accessibility and Inclusion Capacity Program equips tourism operators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to serve the 1 in 5 Australians living with a disability. Pre- and post-training survey data demonstrate significant improvements in staff competency, ensuring a more inclusive experience for all visitors.

This tailored program covers essential topics such as:

  • Introduction to Accessibility and Inclusion
  • Providing Accurate Accessibility Information
  • Delivering Inclusive Customer Service

Creating Lasting Change: Accessibility Assessments & DAIPs

Beyond training, Empowering Experiences conducted Accessibility and Inclusion Site Assessments and Website Reviews for High Valley Dawn Permaculture Farm and The Salty Lime Co, delivering comprehensive Recommendation Reports. These assessments identified opportunities to enhance accessibility across infrastructure, digital communication, and customer service.

We are also developing Disability Access and Inclusion Plans (DAIPs) for these businesses, providing a strategic roadmap to eliminate barriers and foster inclusivity. These DAIPs will outline actionable steps, timelines, and accountability measures to ensure effective implementation.

Why Accessibility Matters for Your Tourism Business

Accessibility improvements aren’t just about compliance—they present a significant business opportunity. Studies show that enhancing access and inclusion can increase tourism revenue by up to 20% by attracting more customers with disabilities and their families.
